Nelson Scene, Part 3: The Pride & Bassbizniz

The Pride

Before dubstep was the guaranteed event floorfiller, before kids wore huge oversized glasses with no lenses and sported greasy perverted mustaches, and 80’s retro was their fashion statement, was a time in nelson when it was hard to find global acts, hard to find the world class music that has become synonymous with Nelson’s unique nightlife. Back in the Fluid lounge days, and even before when legendary houseparties were standard weekly events, Dj Hoola (a lifelong born and raised nelson boy) and his superdriven partner Dj Lion-S (sara spicer), began, with a handful of others, forging a scene in this town which has stood the test of time and brought Nelson into the modern era of global electronic dance music.

The Pride, in its decade of existence, has brought countless big name acts to the kootenays, some before they were as huge as they are. Names like Bassnectar, Glitch Mob, Freq Nasty, Adam Freeland, Subswara, Plump Dj’s, Fort Knox Five, were coming to Nelson before the Bass movement really gained momentum. The Pride consistently sought out the next levels and brought them into this hidden mountain gem, and helped to build the legacy of sound that Nelson has developed over the last 10 years. Both Mike and Sara were Dj’s and lovers of bass heavy thumping beats before they created the pride, and it became one of the institutions of the Nelson scene because of their personal drives to only bring to town music worthy of hearing. No sell out, no shite.

Being major players in Shambhala from the beginning, and the primary programmers of the beach stage, over the years their access to larger playing fields increased and their ability to connect with big name acts ensured Nelson massive that we didn’t have to wait for Shambles every year to hear such great music, it was coming in every month, and it was sub heavy wompy and cutting edge. If you love what THE PRIDE has brought to this town, if you remember the days when it’s all we had here, if you can remember packing the Fluid, or have raised your hands in the air at a beach stage sunrise while your favourite producer/dj killed it hard on a huge PK system, then come out and show some love for Nelson’s very own electronic dance music promoter pioneers. We love you Mike and Sara. Thanks for the memories!

The Living Room/The Beach/The Loving Room

The LIVING ROOM (Kootenai ROOTS)) BEACH STAGE run by the PRIDE. Who is the PRIDE? The Pride is YOU. The FAMILY re-union of LIONS that gather every summer out of natural instinct to their favorite watering hole to cool off and CELEBRATE present LIFE as we know it. It is a sanctuary for the greater KOOTENAI family. We have come to realize that the Living Room has a much deeper meaning to the name. It is the magical setting where we can celebrate the LIVES of LOVED ones lost over the years. Alot of whom thought of the living room as their family and home. We really do believe that home IS where the HEART is. As far as the sounds you will find here it would best be described as DEEP ROOTS whatever the genre may be. DUB, FUNK, SOUL, RAGGA, DISCO, grooves by day transform when the sun sets into BASS HEAVY, GLITCH, GYPSY, CRUNK and all other DOWNTEMPO forms, with a loosely enforced speed limit our aim is to SLOW you down and CHILL you out. As always we encourage every act to play as if they are in their own living room, not just with the music selection but the way they play it also. Leave your SERIOUS at the gate please. So come down to the beach when the sun is blazing and kick your feet up or put them down into the cool river crack yourself a cold one (soda pop of course) and enjoy one of the greatest chillout settings you’ll ever experience this lifetime and maybe your next one. This stage is dedicated and in honor of the loved ones we have lost over the years who have been a part of it and who have inspired us greatly in some way. Saul Starbuck, Otto Schutt, Sam Brown, Aalmah Bloom, Paul Aubrey, Heidi Murphy, Tiffa Novoa, Josh Evin, John Garnett and whom without, none of this would have been possible OSPREY. Bless them all.
